Fern,
I got an answer from Fed Up With Hunger. Here is the sad truth:
"We are defining Angeleno as a person who resides in Los Angeles County. Most, if not all, hunger measures are derived from poverty rates, distribution of emergency services and administration of food benefits that happen at the county level. In the county, 1.25 – 1.5 million (1 in 8) people food insecure and hungry is equal to the population of Philadelphia our nation’s 6th most populous city. Also, 25% of children living in the county are food insecure and hungry. This is about 650,000 boys and girls under the age of 17.

I think the number of LA City is like 1 in 10 people are food insecure or hungry."

Direct any other questions to David Lee - DLee@jewishla.org.

Hi Fern,
I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I am thankful for your comments. I have forwarded your question to someone at Fed Up With Hunger and will post their answer as soon as I get it. I know. 1,000,000 hungry Angelenos doesn't seem possible does it?

I love your website by the way. It seems like you're the go-to expert on patio gardening. I will definitely be consulting it regularly as I start to grow my own vegetable and herbs. I'm planning on starting a potted garden in January when I come back for the holidays.

How is Fed Up With Hunger defining an "Angeleno?" Because if they're refering to residents of the City of Los Angeles, that's about 25% of the city--and while I agree that the hunger problem in Los Angeles is bad--I find that number hard to believe.
